Welcome to Room 10's blog for 2019. We are an energetic Year 1 class and our teacher is Miss King. We are looking forward to working together and learning lots of exciting and new things this year! Check our blog regularly to see what we have been up to. We would love to read your comments.

Koru Whanau Assembly
Room 10 was very proud to present their work at the Koru Whanau assembly on Friday.
Everyone stood up and showed the weaving patterns they had persevered to make.
Some children described their patterns to the audience and they spoke confidently with clear voices so everyone could hear them.

Kelly Sports
We had Kelly sports today with coach Sophie.
We started with some fun games. Then we learnt some techniques to use when we jump. We have to swing our arms, spring with our legs and land like we are on a motorbike. Here's some photos of us in action.

Poetry
We love doing poetry in Room 10.
We have a new poem to learn and enjoy every week. Reading poems helps us develop our oral language. We learn to read smoothly with rhythm and phrasing and this helps us when we read books. The more often we reread our poems the better we get at reading.
Here we are reading poems we already know from the big class poem folder and our own poem folders.
Reading poems also helps us notice rhyming words and develops our phonics skills. This helps us when we are writing as well as reading.
At the end of each week we create our own responses to our poems by illustrating them.

Making Patterns
During mathematics this week we have been making patterns. We have been learning to make a pattern, continue a pattern and describe a pattern. Understanding and using patterns will help us understand and use number concepts and mathematical operations. This will then lead us into using algebra.
First of all we made lots of patterns using all sorts of mathematics equipment.
Next we made patterns by weaving coloured paper. We found that it was really tricky trying to weave the paper. We definitely experienced what it feels like to be in the learning pit.
But we are good at helping each other in Room 10 so we worked together to complete our weaving.
We persevered and we finally succeeded.
Our weaving patterns look very bright displayed on the wall.
