Monarch Caterpillars

We were very lucky last week because Alex and his father brought three caterpillars to school for us. 
We watched them nibbling the swan plant leaves that they were crawling on.

Then one of them started hanging upside down. It was getting ready to turn into a chrysalis. 

When we came back to school the next morning we saw that it was a beautiful chrysalis. 

Then the other two caterpillars started hanging upside down as well. 

We watched them really carefully, hoping to see them change into a chrysalis. However, they both changed when we weren't looking. 
By the end of the day we had two more chrysalises. 

Now we are counting the days until the butterflies emerge.

Grandparents Reading to Us.

A special treat we had for Literacy Week was when some of our grandparents came to read to us. We listened very carefully and enjoyed listening to stories we hadn't heard before.

Book Character Parade

The highlight of Literacy Week was the Book Character Parade. Here we are in our fantastic costumes.

Literacy Week

What a wonderful week have had for Literacy Week. We did lots reading and responding to books and enjoyed some special events.
Here are some of our highlights.


Miss King read us the story about Rainbow Fish and then we wrote about it. We also drew these lovely pictures.

On Tuesday, Frida, Laith and Monique presented their poems at the Poetry Festival. They were amazing standing up in front of the whole Koru Whanau. 

Well done!

Calendar Art

At Sunnyhills School we have the Sunnyhills shine, so we created sunrise and sunset pictures for our calendar art. We used warm colours for the sunrays and cool colours for the sea and land. 

We loved painting these pictures, so we hope our parents will support the PTA and buy a calendar with our gorgeous artwork on it. Then they will get to enjoy the Sunnyhills shine every day of the year.

Granville Came to Visit

The big book we have been reading this week is called Davy D's Dog, written by Jill Eggleton. 

Davy D. has a big, big dog in a teeny, tiny house. 
When his tail goes flick, flick, flick, things start to crash and smash.




Mrs Waite has a big dog as well. His name is Granville and he came to visit us today. Granville's tail went flick, flick, flick too but he didn't crash or smash anything. We let him lick our hands. Then we fed him a treat and gave him a pat. He felt soft. Thanks for visiting us, Granville. 

Koru Whanau Assembly

On Friday Room 10 was very proud to be presenting the Koru Whanau Assembly.

Mila and Laith did an awesome job as announcers and everyone performed the story about Grumpy Bear.

Road Safety

On Thursday, Constable Ian came to Room 10. He taught us how to cross a road safely. We have to remember to stop, look and listen before we cross the road.

100 Days at School

On Friday, we were very excited to celebrate our 100th day at school this year. We have been counting and recording the days every day and we finally made it to 100.

Mila's mum helped us make 100 days headbands.

Then we made fairy bread with hundreds and thousands. It was delicious to eat for morning tea.

We had a fitness challenge to complete ten exercises, ten times. Ten groups of ten is 100. 
Here we are doing ten star jumps.

We estimated how far we would be if we walked 100 steps from our classroom. 100 steps took us to the field - not to the beach or our homes.

 

Another activity was estimating which container had 100 beads. We all thought container B had 100 beads because it had the most. But when we counted the beads we discovered it actually had 324 beads. Container A had 100. 

Another estimation activity was to estimate which bag had 100 objects or not. We found out that they all had 100 objects but they all looked different.

We had some 100 piece jigsaw puzzles to do throughout the day. We were very proud to complete them.

 We loved celebrating being at school for 100 days so far this year.

Koru Whanau Assembly

Room 10 was very proud to present their work at the Koru Whanau assembly on Friday. 

Everyone stood up and showed the weaving patterns they had persevered to make. 

                          

 

Some children described their patterns to the audience and they spoke confidently with clear voices so everyone could hear them. 

Poetry

We love doing poetry in Room 10. 

We have a new poem to learn and enjoy every week. Reading poems helps us develop our oral language. We learn to read smoothly with rhythm and phrasing and this helps us when we read books. The more often we reread our poems the better we get at reading. 

Here we are reading poems we already know from the big class poem folder and our own poem folders.

Reading poems also helps us notice rhyming words and develops our phonics skills. This helps us when we are writing as well as reading. 

At the end of each week we create our own responses to our poems by illustrating them. 

Then we take our poem folders home to share with our families over the weekend.
